Foraminifera Earrings: GlobigerinaRegular price €80.00
These earrings are inspired by a genus of unicellular planktonic Foraminifera called Globigerina. The name is derived from the multi-globular form of the shell (the test). The small bumps on the test are what remains after the cell dies and the long, slender spikes adorning the test break off. When the Globigerina are alive, the spikes function to keep the plankton buoyant. When they die, their tests sink down and settle on the ocean floor. It is estimated that 50% of the ocean floor is covered with the "Globigerina Ooze."
The length of the earring below the loop is 1.4 cm (0.55 inches) and each earring weighs approximately 4.5 g.
The earrings are available in sterling silver (as shown) or bronze and finished with nickel-free sterling silver or rose gold-plated silver hooks to match.
