The Single Coccolith pendant represents one plate, or coccolith, of the single-celled algae Coccolithus pelagicus. The shell of this unicellular phytoplankton is composed of interlocking plates, called coccoliths, composed of calcium carbonate. Coccolithophores are found in the sunlit top layer of the ocean and are one of the most abundant phytoplankton species in marine ecosystems. Because they emit oxygen to the atmosphere and are eaten by other ocean organisms, they are important to a healthy ocean ecosystem. As oceans become warmer and more acidic under climate change conditions, the calcium carbonate shells of phytoplankton like Coccolithus dissolve and their communities decrease in size.

The Single Coccolith pendant is 17 mm (0.6 inches) x 19 mm (0.75 inches) below the bail.

The pendant is 3D printed in lightly polished solid sterling silver or 14K gold plated brass, finished with a 45 cm/18 inch long sterling silver or gold plated silver chain*, and is ready for gift giving with a gift box, polishing cloth, and care instructions.

*While a 45 cm/18 inch fits most, other chain lengths are available. At checkout, write a note indicating your preference.
