High-quality art print of an original watercolor illustration of bark beetles. As a member of the beetle subgroup Scolytinae, they’re more like weevils. When they’re feeding and reproducing in the phloem of spruce trees, they’re dragging around a fungus with them that is not good for the tree. Scientists are hard at work trying to figure out how to keep the weevil and the fungus from killing trees. What’s interesting, though, is that some trees are resistant to the wiles of this biological onslaught. It would be great to know the specifics of that defense mechanism.

Bark beetles (Ips typographus) come in many colors from rust orange to blue-black, just like this painting.
