These delicate star-shaped earrings are based on the colony structure of the freshwater diatom Asterionella. Single Asterionella cells are surrounded by tubular-shaped silicon shells. The individual cells, however, form a colony with 8 to 20 other cells. The cells are anchored in the center by extracellular matter. Asterionella is one of the most abundant types of algae in freshwater environments.
The Asterionella earrings are 2.4 cm in diameter below the loop, and each earring weighs 1.5 g.
