Material

These earrings are inspired by Drosophila melanogaster, the fruit fly. Drosophila is a model organism with a short generation time that produces a lot of offspring, an ideal combination for genetic research. Although you might think that the fruit fly is very different from the human animal, in reality, 50% of fly proteins have a direct homolog in the human genome. Drosophila is being used to study several neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's as well as mechanisms in more common human diseases like cancer and diabetes.

The fly is 1.8cm (0.71 inches) in length below the loop and each earring weighs 3.5 g.

The earrings are 3D printed in solid sterling silver or 14K gold plated brass and then finished with sterling silver or gold plated silver hooks to match. All earring hooks are nickel-free. The earrings are ready for gift giving with a gift box, polishing cloth, and care instructions.

Due to the intricate details on this particular design, the earrings are polished only gently. The finish on the earrings may range from more textured to slightly more shiny.

Transformed from disappointed to very satisfied!

After expressing disappointment with the finish and polish of the sterling silver drosophila earrings we recently ordered (relative to the website picture), I was immediately contacted by Kimberly to resolve the issue with an exchange or refund. In fact, she even took the extra step of changing the website pic and description to manage future customer expectations. In the end, we decided to let the recipient of the earrings make the decision of whether to return them or not. She absolutely LOVED them, immediately replaced the earrings she was wearing, and told us she wouldn’t part with them! Rough finish and NOT as pictured

So bummed. We bought a pair of the sterling silver drosophila earrings through etsy for a special person in our life. The picture on the website shows a polished, smooth, beautiful pair of fly earrings. What we received was nothing like the picture. Not polished, roughly finished, we're not even going to give these to the person we bought them for. They were expensive so we can't toss them in the trash (at least for a while). I couldn't figure out a way to post a picture of the product we received on this review.

If you did place an order on my Etsy site and would like to return the earrings for a full refund, please contact me at ontogenie3d@gmail.com with your order number.
As for the differences in texture in some of my products, my 3D printing service decides how vigorously to polish based on the details of the design, and as this is a highly detailed design with small parts, there can be variations in the extent of polishing by the service that I can't control for. I've uploaded a photo that hopefully more accurately represents the texture of the silver earrings.

a wonderful site

We wanted fruit fly earrings, and found a pair on this site. The owner was willing to make them in gold as a custom order and they are terrific. When we gave them to our daughter, a biologist who works with fruit flies, the first thing she did was examine them closely for accuracy of detail, and she was very happy with them that way. She also loves wearing them. They are comfortable and very attractive without shouting their presence. A thorough success.
