Plant Stomata Earrings

These earrings depict the guard cells of the stomata, pores on the surface of the plant that facilitate gas exchange for the plant. Through the stomata, plants take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and respire oxygen. The opening and closing of the stoma is regulated by osmotic pressure in the guard cells and is dependent on carbon dioxide concentration, light intensity, humidity and other environmental factors. The guard cells depicted in this pendant show the large nucleus in each guard cell as well as the chloroplasts. Designed in collaboration with Prof. Keiko Torii, University of Washington.
The earrings are 3D printed in solid sterling silver, brass or bronze and finished with nickel-free earring backs (not shown). Each earring measures 1 cm in the longest dimension (top to bottom) and the post diameter is 1 mm.
